I come from a sailor background with 5 years experience working on various ocean going commercial vessels where attention to detail, ability to focus on the task at hand, teamwork and leadership were crucial to successful voyages. Dev Bootcamp focuses on Ruby, JavaScript, Ruby on Rails, common JavaScript libraries, SQL, HTML and CSS, as well as pair programming, agile and test driven development. The program also integrates work on team skills like communication, empathy and effective feedback.

Mate on various tug boats. Responsibilities include: Navigating watch; Load/unload
volatile liquid cargoes onto barge; Pilot the landing of the barge with tug alongside; Oversee, delegate, and participate in general boat maintenance and repair; Update and keep current navigational charts with local notice to mariners; Line handling during arrival/departure from dock; Conduct drills with crew (i.e. fire, abandon ship, oil spill, man overboard, etc.).

Lead AB on Paul R Tregurtha (largest ship on the Great Lakes). Responsibilities included: Ship maintenance; Loading/unload coal and iron freight cargo; Remove and replace hatch covers; Operate wire winches during tying up/letting go from docks and transiting the Soo Locks; Stand wheelsman watch in the pilot house; Wheel the boat through connecting Great Lakes rivers; Perform fire and emergency duties; Managed all remaining ABs and deckhands as daily duties on deck were carried out, under the direct order of the First Mate.
