In my own words

Steven

* Highly skilled and experienced engineering professional with a solid background in development and manufacturing of complex products and assemblies for a wide range of industries and a variety of markets and volumes.

* Played key roles in every aspect of the product lifecycle - successfully! From initial concept and prototype to sustaining for manufacturing, this experience gives me a unique comprehension of the product lifecycle, fostering the objective decision-making required in a successful project.* Superior documentation skills: over 20,000 hours of 3D modeling experience utilizing SolidWorks, CATIA, and other CAD packages; expert level in complex surface development; formal training in Tool, Jig, and Fixture Methods of Design, as well as the application of GD&T and ASME Y14.5-2009; fluency in PC technical and management tools; excellent technical writing abilities.* Accomplished in the design, analysis, and testing of tools used in the production of everything from small precision components to assemblies five stories high and over half the length of a football field. Trained in the use of laser trackers for tooling setup, maintenance, and inspection. My experience provides a firm foundation on proven method, and my knowledge and creativity fuel my ability to expand and innovate.* Experienced in the use of FEA methods and software to predict physical behaviors and safety factors/failure loads as well as determination of wind loading on complex surfaces, and the application of particle studies as flow visualization aids.* Hands-on skills in machine shop and electronics, fabrication of prototype parts, assembly process development, and system troubleshooting.* Knowledge of product, process, and tooling validations; experience with FAA certifications and aircraft configuration control; intimate familiarity with hardware standards and military specifications; experience with medical device tooling and validations.

Trajectory

Dec 2011 — Jan 2016
Mechanical Engineer 3 · Insitu, Inc.
As the mechanical engineering representative on a multidisciplinary team, developed electronics modules and ground support equipment used in Insitu UAS's. Design challenges included harsh service environments, portability requirements, thermal management issues and a highly compressed schedule. Using SolidWorks and working with CAD designers, created drawing packages used in the build of electronics modules and test tooling, including detail level sheet metal and machined parts, cable and harness definition and routing, top level assembly, subassemblies, and system level drawings and BOM's. Acted as subject matter expert (SME) for the Mark 1 SkyHook recovery system.
May 2009 — Nov 2011
Engineering Manager/Machine Shop Manager · Hardin Optical Company
Supervised the work of four specialized engineers on site, and three machinists off-site. Coordinated sustaining work as well as R&D projects through both departments. Worked closely with production managers and optical technicians to design and fabricate the process tooling and systems required in the manufacture of custom optical components. Coordinated the implementation of the PDMWorks Enterprise system. Administered SolidWorks and PDMWorks Enterprise. Designed and implemented procedures in both departments to bring them into ISO regulatory compliance.
May 2007 — May 2009
Senior Mechanical Engineer · Sea Tel, Inc.
Acted as lead engineer in charge of new radome designs and existing radome improvement projects all radomes, ranging in size from 12 inches to 16 feet in diameter. Redesigned composite tooling to meet quality standards. Designed the next generation of high performance “RF tuned” sandwich core composite radomes and developed an innovative process to produce them quickly and economically. Successfully tested new radomes to Mil-S-901D shock survivability and DNV Offshore Environmental Service Specifications. Led teams of designers, technicians, and machinists on various projects. Acted as mentor to less experienced engineers.
Nov 2006 — May 2007
Contract Mechanical Engineer · Pacific Scientific, EMC
Developed a technique and designed fixtures for in process inspection and thermal and vibration testing of complex electro-optical and PCB assemblies used in the THAAD missile guidance and control system. Utilizing this technique before hard wiring PCB’s into the final assembly enabled production to reduce cycle time from over five days to less than one day. Fabricated prototypes and designed all related tooling for use in this process. Published process documentation and tool usage instructions.
