In my own words

Joseph

The difference between a good design and a great design can be attributed to two words repeatability and reproducibility.

A good design will meet specification requirements, while a great design not only meets specifications, but also has a long product life with minimal maintenance needed along the way.

Repeatability and reproducibility have been a large part of my 5 year career working within New Product Development. I realized how critical these two words are and how much they are overlooked throughout the design process. I utilize the latest industry tools and best practices to reduce the risk of this from occurring. Such tools include DFMEA, DFM, DFA, Tolerance analysis, and Simulations.

The standard deliverables, 3D models and Technical Drawings are not sufficient in telling the true story of how a design progressed throughout the process. As a Freelance Designer, I make it my priority to deliver a clear and concise document defining all design decisions, calculations, and assumptions made throughout the design process. Resulting in a fact / research driven design.

Fields of expertise: • Strong organizational and communication skills • Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, Inventor 2017, Solidworks, and PTC Creo • Mechanical Simulation, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) • Understanding/application of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and Tolerance Stack Analysis • Design development in accordance with Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) • Innovative problem-solving skills • Industrial Automation • Fitness Industry • Material Handling • Consumer products

Trajectory

Jan 2021 — Now
Mechanical Engineer · Cricut Inc.
Aug 2018 — Jan 2021
NPD Engineer · IMI Precision Engineering
Jun 2016 — Jul 2018
Project Engineer · Woodway USA
While still working within New Product Development process, I changed roles to a Project Engineer. This change allowed me to see all aspects of the NPD process, while still allowing me to be technical and design products. This was a very educational experience allowing me to be hands on in all aspects NPD. To succeed in this role, I had to be an effective communicator, be willing to step out of my comfort zone, and manage my time and priorities as well as others.
Apr 2015 — Jun 2016
Product Engineer · Magnetek
I proudly accepted the role of Product Engineer as my first full time Engineering position out of college. Magnetek which was acquired by Columbus Mckinnon while I was employed was a part of the Material Handling Industry. Acting as a product engineer I was responsible for the upkeep of several existing product line offerings and establishing new ones, as well as acting as a Design Engineer. I personally was responsible for the festoon product line, crane brake wheel product line, and began development on the plug and play product line. My responsibilities didn't end there I also performed testing, design, and created tools to aid Sales Application Engineers.
Dec 2014 — Apr 2015
Mechanical Engineering Intern · L&T Technology Services Limited
I was originally hired on at Dell Services, but after two months of employment the company was acquired by L&T Technology Services. I had the opportunity to work onsite at the Harley Davidson Product Development Center. This was my first experience working with a global team where the majority of communication was done via email.
Jun 2013 — Dec 2014
R&D Intern · Charter Automotive
At the start of my engineering career, I worked within the R&D department at Charter Automotive. The department consisted of one full time engineer and two interns, I was fortunate enough to be one of the two interns learning from an engineer with over forty years of experience. The R&D department was very independent, giving me the opportunity to develop a wide range of experience and skills.
