In My Own Words
Brooke Reed is a current undergraduate student at University of Hawai’i at Mānoa and holds a position as a seasonal California State Parks lifeguard in San Diego. Through her engagement in public service and lifesaving efforts while serving as a lifeguard for State Parks, Brookehas honed her ability to perform proficiently under pressure, cultivated robust leadership skills, became an adept communicator, and acquired a profound sense of humility and maturity at an early age.
Brooke intends to continue in her part-time role with State Parks, while concurrently leveraging her current position as a stepping stone towards a career within business. Lifeguarding for State Parks has facilitated the discovery of inherent strengths that Brooke can transfer into her professional endeavors.
At present, Brooke is actively searching for a business internship for the summer of 2024, being open to various business specialities. Such an opportunity would empower them to gain further insight and experience.

The Calvin Shindo Student Venture Fund is a venture capital fund for early-stage UH-affiliated companies. The goal of the program is 1) to enrich student learning by providing a hands-on opportunity to learn the venture capital process and startup finance, and 2) to nurture high potential, early-stage ventures.
Here, I have been working closely with program directors to offer pre-seed investments to students and alumni from all 10 community colleges and universities within the University of Hawai‘i System.
I have had the pleasure to source and evaluate potential partner companies and establish strategic collaborations to support growth and operational efficiency of the Venture Fund.
Additionally, I developed and executed diverse marketing strategies to enhance brand visibility and engagement, leveraging digital platforms, in person events, and targeted outreach.
I have also gained a great deal of experience with recruiting, screening, qualifying, and recommending investments, as well as following-up with existing portfolio companies.
Ocean Lifeguard I

I am a part time Ocean Lifeguard in Northern San Diego, where I have had an abundance of experience responding to traumatic injuries, leading a team, serving the public, and saving countless lives from nearly drowning. During my time working with California State Parks, I have not only strengthened my skills in leadership, communication, teamwork, attention to detail, and handling high pressure situations, but also gained maturity, humility, and a true passion to help others. I plan on continuing working for State Parks while simultaneously using my current position to gain even more skills that will continue to shape me and prepare me to excel in the corporate world.
